A client asked for a 'sunset' balayage and I almost said no

This lady came in yesterday wanting a full head of orange and pink tones, which honestly scared me a bit. I usually stick to more natural colors, but she had a picture from a festival and was really set on it. I mixed a custom bowl using a warm copper and a tiny bit of a direct dye fuchsia, just hoping for the best. The real shock was when I rinsed it out and saw how the colors melted together. It wasn't a harsh line at all, it looked like a real sunset on her hair. I learned that sometimes the client's wild idea can push you to mix colors you'd never put together, and it actually works. I'm still thinking about that pink and copper combo. Has anyone else had a color request that turned out way better than you thought it would?

Honestly the best part is when a client brings in a picture from a real event, not just a Pinterest edit. That festival lighting probably showed the colors in a specific way that made her obsessed. Makes you think about how the light source in the inspiration photo changes the whole game.

Totally! And it's not just about the light source itself, but the TIME of day. A color in harsh noon sun looks completely different in that soft, golden hour glow. That festival pic was probably taken at dusk with all those string lights, which adds a warm tint you can't get from a studio shot. So the client isn't just in love with the color, they're in love with a specific MOMENT. If you match the color under your shop lights, it'll never look right to them because the feeling is gone.

Tried a neon green once and it looked amazing in the sun.
