Warning: The current near the old pier in Port Townsend is way stronger than it looks

I was working a hull inspection job there last Thursday and got pushed about 15 feet off my line in under a minute. The tide tables didn't show anything crazy, but the water moving around those pilings creates a real pull. Has anyone else had a close call in that specific spot?

I've been diving near that pier for years and never had an issue. The current is noticeable but manageable if you plan for it. I think people underestimate how much a small change in the tide stage can affect the flow there. You just have to give those old pilings a wider berth than you might think. What time of day were you working?
