My dive partner in New Orleans swore by using a zip tie on the bailout bottle valve

He said, 'Just put one around the valve handwheel and the bottle neck, it'll keep it from opening on its own.' I did it for a job on a muddy river bottom last fall. Sure enough, after a long swim through zero-vis, I felt the zip tie snap against my glove, stopping the valve from turning and possibly dumping my air. Has anyone else picked up a small gear trick like that from an old hand?

Seems like a weird thing to worry about. Those valves are pretty stiff on their own, and a zip tie sounds like it could just get in the way. I'd be more concerned about it breaking and jamming the valve shut when you actually need it.

Yeah, but what about vibration loosening it over time?

That zip tie breaking could jam things up like nathanl36 said.
