Tbh, my cat's sudden litter box avoidance took 8 months to fix

Honestly, my cat Mittens started peeing on the rug in my apartment in Phoenix and I tried everything new litter, vet checks, more boxes. Ngl, it turned out she hated the automatic litter robot we bought last spring, the noise scared her. Has anyone else's cat freaked out over a specific type of litter box?

Man, that's rough. I never even thought about the smell of the plastic on new boxes being a problem. My friend's cat refused to use a covered box because it trapped the scent and freaked her out. They had to go back to a basic open tray. Could it be something simple like the texture under their paws, or even how high the sides are to climb over?

You're onto something with the texture and height, but the plastic smell is a HUGE deal. That "new box" smell is actually off-gassing chemicals, and a cat's nose is way more sensitive. It can smell like a scary, toxic place to them. My vet said it's a common trigger for avoidance, like a strong cleaner would be. Letting it air out for a week can sometimes fix the whole problem.
