My cat's litter box protest finally made sense after a trip to the vet

For months, my tabby Mittens would pee right next to the box, and I kept trying different litters and cleaning it twice a day. The vet in Phoenix found she had a mild bladder infection, which was making the plastic liner feel uncomfortable on her paws. Has anyone else had a cat start avoiding the box because of a hidden health problem?

Oh wow, that makes so much sense. I read an article once that said sudden litter box avoidance is almost always the first sign of a health issue, not a behavior problem. It explained that cats link the pain of something like a UTI or arthritis with the box itself, so they go somewhere else hoping it won't hurt. It's crazy how they can't just tell us what's wrong. Really glad you got it figured out for Mittens.

Sometimes cats just get picky about their litter box setup, @grace_bailey34.
