Spent 4 hours yesterday on a single stair tread that had a hidden, curved riser from a 1950s remodel.
The original riser was cut with a curve for some long-gone decorative trim, so my standard tack strip wouldn't sit flush, and I had to custom-cut a plywood filler piece to get a solid base before I could even start stretching.

Yeah @the_barbara is right, those hidden things suck. Did you have to recut the tack strip too, or just the plywood?

Ugh, hidden surprises like that are the worst! Sounds like you handled it perfectly though.
