TIL a trick for marking studs without a stud finder

I was at the lumber yard in Springfield last week and heard an older guy tell his helper to use a strong magnet to find drywall nails. I tried it on a job yesterday with a small magnet from a cabinet door catch. It worked great to mark the stud line before cutting. Has anyone else used this method on plaster walls?

Magnet trick is a lifesaver on plaster. Those old walls can be a real pain to figure out.

My old foreman swore by a magnet on lath and plaster.

Find magnets get stuck on everything, not just lath. I just tap the wall and listen for the hollow sound instead.
