Question about a job offer I got last Friday in Austin

They offered me $72,000 a year, which is less than I make now, but said the promotion path is faster. I turned it down because the pay cut felt too big, even with the promise of moving up. Did I make a mistake, or was sticking with my current salary the right call?

My buddy Mark took a similar pay cut for a "fast track" role at a startup here in Austin. He was making 85k and dropped to 75k on a manager promise. Two years later, he was still waiting on that title bump and the salary never caught up. Promotions are just words until they put the new number in writing. You probably saved yourself a lot of frustration.

Sometimes you gotta take a risk to get ahead, and startups can move way faster than big companies.
