Warning: My tent ripped in a storm, and I can't decide if sewing it up is smart or if I should just replace it.

One side says a good stitch saves cash and helps the planet, but the other side claims messed-up gear isn't safe, so where do you stand?

Have you checked how bad the rip actually is? I always try to repair my gear first because it cuts down on waste. Last season, my rainfly split open during a downpour, and I fixed it with a simple needle and thread. That tent is still going strong after multiple uses, so a good repair can really work. Just use strong thread and go over the area a few times to make it secure. Adding a bit of seam grip after sewing will help keep water out too.

Repairing gear is such a smart move for the environment (and your wallet too). I've fixed a few tears myself, and it always feels good to extend the life of something. Solid advice on using strong thread and seam grip.
