PSA: My $15 Walmart sleeping bag vs. a borrowed $300 down bag in the Adirondacks last fall. The difference was not subtle.

My friend's down bag compressed to nothing in her pack. My bulky Walmart one took up half the space and made the hike in miserable. Sometimes the real cost is in the weight and bulk you carry.

But that bulk is a one-time problem on the hike in. Being cold all night is a constant problem that ruins the whole trip. The cheaper bag just can't compete on actual warmth.
