TIL ultrasonic cleaners can mess up old shutters if you're not careful
I used to think throwing any crusty shutter in the ultrasonic was the way to go. Last month I zapped a Compur from the 50s and the blades started sticking worse than before. A old timer at the shop told me the vibration can loosen the rivets on leaf shutters if you leave it in too long. Now I only do 3 minute cycles max and check after each one. Anybody else had a shutter get ruined by an ultrasonic?

Swore by ultrasonic cleaning until I did a 10 minute cycle on an old Wollensak and came back to find one blade slightly out of alignment. I almost cried because it was a shutter I'd been hunting for forever. Now I'm super paranoid, I do shorter runs with a quick listen and look after each one. Idk, maybe the old timers were right about it loosening things up over time.

Damn that's brutal. Did you notice any change in the pitch or vibration before the blades shifted, or was it just business as usual until you pulled it out?
