Vent: I dropped $250 on a cheap signal meter and it gave me a false positive that cost me half a day.

I got a 'good' reading at the tap but the issue was actually a chewed drop line three houses down, so what's a reliable mid-range meter you guys actually trust?

Feel your pain, that's the worst. My old meter lied to me so much I started trusting my neighbor's guesswork more. I finally bit the bullet and got a used Viavi from a guy upgrading, best decision ever.

Honestly I've had the opposite luck with used gear (got burned pretty bad last year). Sometimes the old meter just needs a proper calibration, saves a ton of cash.

Trusting a neighbor's guesswork more" haha I've been there. I used to swear by buying cheap gear until a $200 meter cost me a whole Saturday chasing a ghost signal. Now I'm on the used Viavi bandwagon too, that Lisak14 mentioned. Better to let someone else take the depreciation hit on the good stuff.
