My friend said my travel budget was 'all flight, no fun' after seeing my Lisbon plan
I showed her my spreadsheet where I spent $700 on airfare but only $50 for five days of food and activities. She pointed out I was skipping all the local experiences just to save cash, which made the trip pointless. So now I split my budget 60/40, with the bigger part for doing stuff on the ground. Has anyone else had to totally rethink how they split their trip money?

Yeah, but what's the point of going then?

Well, the point is to actually enjoy the trip.

Wasn't there a blog post about this called the "flight tax"? It argued that if your plane ticket is more than a third of your total spend, you're basically just paying to be somewhere else, not to actually be there. Your old plan with the $50 for everything on the ground is exactly what they said not to do. Splitting it your new way makes way more sense to actually enjoy the place.
