Hostel dorms vs private rooms - the $30 gamble that paid off for me

Last trip to Barcelona I booked a 6-bed dorm for $25 a night while my friend paid $90 for a private room down the hall. I got a free walking tour invite from my bunkmate and saved $60 on dinners because the hostel did family style meals. Is saving that much worth the risk of snorers and early packers, or do you guys stick to private rooms for the solid sleep?

Did your friend at least get a complimentary hairnet for that price? I'd rather gamble on a Russian snorer than pay a mortgage for one night in Barcelona. For $90 you could buy 3.6 nights of hostel chaos and still have leftover cash for those overpriced tapas. Honestly my biggest risk was that one guy who packed his bag at 5am like he was defusing a bomb.

Defusing a bomb? That's the most dramatic description of packing I've ever heard. You're lucky he didn't wake up the whole floor thinking there was actually an emergency.
