Saw a sign at the local grocery store that made me think twice about meal planning
The store had a big display for a 'budget meal kit' that cost $12 per serving, which seems crazy for a place that's supposed to be cheap. I always thought making things from scratch with basic ingredients was the real way to save money. Do you think these pre-packed ideas are ever worth the cost, or is it just a marketing trap?

Twelve bucks a serving for a budget kit is a total joke. That's not saving money, that's paying a huge convenience tax. I can make a whole pot of chili for less than that. It's pure marketing to make you feel like you're getting a deal when you're really just buying overpriced, pre-measured salt and pepper.

Right? I bought one of those kits once and felt totally ripped off. It's just fancy packaging for stuff already in my pantry.

Oh man, @benbrown you just made me rethink everything. I used to be the guy who bought those kits thinking, "Well, it's cheaper than takeout and saves me a trip to the store." But yeah, you're totally right. Twelve bucks for one serving is insane when I can grab a can of beans and some ground beef for way less. And the "convenience" is a total lie too, because you still have to chop stuff and cook it. I guess I was just fooling myself into thinking it was a smarter choice than it really is.
