Had to pick between a disc broker and a full-service one in Chicago last month
I needed to offload a bunch of classic rock vinyl from my dad's collection, like 300 records. One broker offered me $2 a pop flat rate, the other wanted to auction them but took a 30% cut. I went with the auction guy because the guy said 'you might have some sleepers in there.' Turns out a 1968 Doors pressing went for $80 on its own. Has anyone else gambled on the auction route and won big, or did I just get lucky?

Oh man, that's a solid move. I read somewhere that a lot of those estate sale buyers really don't know what they've got, so an auction house with a good eye can find the gems. I heard a story about a guy who found a rare Beatles butcher cover in a pile of old records and it went for like $400 at auction. You definitely got lucky with that Doors pressing, but it sounds like you made a smart call listening to the auction guy. Was it a local shop or one of those online-only places?

That's like betting on a horse and actually winning, isn't it?

Wait... you actually won big on a horse race like that? That's wild @beth_green. I mean, I've thrown a few bucks at the track before but never hit anything close to what you're talking about. Most people lose their shirts on those long shot bets. You must have had some kind of system or just got really lucky... or both. Betting on the right horse at the right odds feels like finding a twenty in an old jacket, but way bigger. Good for you though, seriously. That kind of win doesn't come around often.
