Can we talk about the wild goose chase of understanding broker fee codes?
I opened my latest account summary and spotted a charge called 'operational levy.' No idea what that meant, so I rang my broker's help line. After waiting through awful music, a rep picked up and said he needed to consult his guide. He came back five minutes later calling it a 'system use cost.' I asked for a real example, and he mumbled about server updates. Then he passed me to a supervisor who called it a 'client support fee.' I actually giggled because each person had a new name for it. In the end, I gave up and accepted the mystery. Honestly, why make it so hard to know what you're paying for?

Wasn't there a news piece about brokers inventing fees just last week?

But is it really that bad... @haydenburns, that news piece might just be showing rare cases. Most brokers I've seen charge normal commissions with maybe a small admin fee. For example, a fifty-dollar document fee or a hundred-dollar processing charge isn't unheard of. It's not like they're inventing thousands in fake costs... usually it's minor stuff. So calling it 'inventing fees' seems a bit over the top to me.
