Switched from striking joints with a tuck pointer to a 5-gallon bucket lid scrap

Used to think striking with the same cheap tuck pointer was fine. Cut a curve into a plastic lid and got perfect concave joints every time. Anyone else make their own strike tools from junk laying around?

Tuck pointers actually leave a flat or slightly rounded joint depending on how you angle them, not a true concave. The bucket lid trick works because the plastic is flexible enough to follow the curve of the joint bed. Most guys I know use old credit cards or soda cans to get that same effect. You ever try running a wet sponge over the joint after striking to get rid of the little drag marks?

Yeah the wet sponge trick is a lifesaver for cleaning up drag marks. I actually started using one of those cheap kitchen sponges with the scrubby side on it. I wet it down good and give the joint a light pass about 5 minutes after striking, when it's still a little soft but not wet. Cleans it up way cleaner than a brush does.
