Tbh I was just walking past The Last Chapter in Portland last spring, not even planning to peek. But they had this whole window set up like a 1980s living room, complete with a beanbag chair and a CRT TV playing a VHS of Reading Rainbow. It hit me different because my mom used to take me to that exact same store when I was 7, and she always let me pick one paperback from the spinner rack. The display had a handwritten note that said "some stories age like you," and I just stood there for like 10 minutes. I ended up buying a dog-eared copy of The Giver that had a kid's crayon doodle on the inside cover. Has anyone else had a bookstore window trigger a full memory like that, or was I just having a weird emotional day?
Bookseller here, so I've seen folks get misty in the stacks plenty of times. But that Reading Rainbow setup would've gotten me too, that show was basically my childhood babysitter. The crayon doodle in a used copy thing, that's the real treasure. I've bought books just for the weird little marks left behind, feels like a secret conversation with a stranger. You weren't having a weird day, that window was just built different.
