In our book club, I used to get annoyed when talks went off track, but now I see how those side stories bring us closer.

Heard a podcast say those tangents actually build the real community... not just the book talk.

Totally, it's those weird side chats that stick with you. Last month we spent twenty minutes debating if a character's cat was a metaphor or just a cat. Ended up sharing pictures of our own pets and now we have a separate text thread for that. The book felt almost like an excuse to just hang out after that.
