Book club picked a 700 page novel and only 3 of us finished it by the Thursday meetup
Our host in Portland chose Infinite Jest for March and when we met at her place on the 14th, half the group admitted they stopped around page 200, so we spent two hours just summarizing what they missed instead of actually talking about the book, and now I am wondering if we should set a page cap for future picks.
Picking Infinite Jest for a casual book club is like signing everyone up for a marathon when they showed up for a jog lol. Of course only 3 people made it through, that book is basically a part time job with footnotes. The real comedy here is spending two hours doing a recap like it's a TV show everyone missed an episode of. A page cap might help but the bigger fix is maybe picking books people can actually finish in a month. Nobody wants homework for fun, and 700 pages of dense stuff is definitely homework. Next time maybe vote on shorter picks or split a big one over two months so the whole group stays in it.
