A book club member told me I was skimming too fast - changed how I prep

I used to race through books just to have talking points for debates, but one guy in my Chicago book club called me out for missing subtle symbolism. He pointed to a specific scene in chapter 7 of 'The Night Circus' where I missed the whole color motif. Now I take notes on character arcs as I read and it's made the discussions way more interesting. Anyone else get feedback that totally changed your reading method?

Kinda feels like that guy was gatekeeping reading honestly. Not everyone needs to catch every color motif in chapter 7 to enjoy a book. Some people just read for plot and that's fine too. I bet he's the type who gets annoyed when you don't annotate in the margins like it's a college course. If you're having fun and getting something out of the book who cares if you missed a few symbols.

My buddy Steve got told he was "reading like a Netflix binge" at his Denver group. Now he reads one chapter a night and texts everyone his wildest guesses about what happens next.
