Had to choose between a 3/8 and 1/2 inch backing bar for a 2-inch pipe weld.
Went with the 1/2 inch for better heat control on the root pass. The wider bar kept the puddle steady and prevented burn-through. Anyone have a different go-to size for schedule 80?

Isn't it funny how the right tool always depends on the hand holding it?

Better heat control" with a 1/2 inch bar? I've always found the 3/8 works better on sch 80. Lets you get in tighter and the heat is more focused, actually helps me avoid burn through.

Yeah that's a solid point about the 3/8 bar. The smaller cup just lets you get right in the groove, especially on a tight bevel. You can really push the puddle where you need it without washing over the edges. With a half inch you're fighting to keep the arc focused, ends up heating a bigger area than you want sometimes. Found that out the hard way on some heavy wall stuff last year lol.
