Bought a cheap welding hood off Amazon and it cost me $200 in rework

I grabbed a $30 auto-darkening hood from some no-name brand on Prime Day thinking I was being smart with my money. After a week of welding 3/8 inch plate on a boiler repair in St. Louis, I realized the shade wasn't switching fast enough and I was burning my eyes without knowing it. Has anyone else had a cheap hood mess up their work like that and what brand did you switch to?

Oh man, you basically paid $230 for a lesson in "you get what you pay for" with that hood. I'm surprised it didn't start autodimming to the beat of your favorite song instead of the arc. Guess your eyes are the real victims of that Prime Day DEAL.

Are you really sure the hood was the problem? I used a cheap one for years and never had that happen. Maybe it was just a bad batch or you got a dud.
