My uncle's blurry bird pic secret turned out to be a total bust

My uncle swore that turning off image stabilization would fix my shaky hawk photos at the marsh near Savannah. I tried it for a whole morning and every single shot came out worse, like double-vision bad. Turns out he was using a tripod the entire time, which explains why his advice never worked for my handheld shots. Anyone else get handed a tip that only works with gear they didn't mention?
