My buddy's take on that famous twist ending made me flip my opinion

So I was talking with my friend Dave at a diner in Cleveland last Friday, and he said the ending everyone loves is actually the author admitting they wrote themselves into a corner. I always thought it was deep and poetic, but he pointed out how the last 10 pages just dump a random character in to explain everything. The more I sit with it, the more I see his side, it feels lazy and not weird in a good way. Has anyone else had a second opinion totally ruin a classic ending for them, or am I just overthinking it?

Well, I read an interview with the author once where they admitted the whole thing was a happy accident. They said they had no clue how to wrap it up and just threw in that character on a whim. That stuck with me, and now every time I get to that ending, I can't unsee it. It does come off as a quick fix rather than some grand statement. Your buddy Dave might be onto something, even if it stings a little to hear it. I guess a lot of what we call genius is just luck or last-minute panic.
