PSA: Asking my aunt vs. reading a book about birth mother experiences
I spent a whole Saturday reading a 300-page book about birth mothers, but my aunt told me her story over coffee in 20 minutes and it hit way harder. The book had all the facts and statistics, but hearing her talk about holding my cousin for that one hour before placement was something no author could capture. Has anyone else found that real stories from someone you know teach you more than any formal resource?

Your aunt's story is one real experience, and those are the ones that stick with you.

Oh man, I gotta disagree a little bit here! I think both have their place and honestly the book probably gave you stuff your aunt never would. Like your aunt's story is powerful and personal but it's just one experience you know? That book likely had stories from women of different ages, backgrounds, and situations. Maybe a birth mom who was forced into placement versus one who chose it, or someone who had an open adoption versus closed. Your aunt gave you heart but the book gave you context and that matters too.
