Just realized a simple way to handle the 'what's your story' question at family events
I used to freeze up when my cousin's kids asked why I didn't have kids. Last Easter, I practiced saying 'That's a story for when you're older' and it worked perfectly. What do you all say to little kids who get curious?

That line about the stork from @the_jennifer is a good one, but it points to a bigger thing. People, not just kids, feel way too free to ask about life choices that are really private. I've seen this a lot. It's like there's a script everyone is expected to follow, and if you step off it, you have to explain yourself. Having a simple, polite shutdown ready is just smart. It saves your energy and stops a conversation that was never going to go anywhere good.

Tell them I'm waiting for the stork to bring me a kid who knows how to mind their own business. Works every time.
