The one thing I never did before starting a new show

I used to just hit play on whatever looked good and zone out for like an hour before realizing I was lost. Then last month I started a crime drama and my buddy asked me who the main detective was and I had no clue. Turns out I was skipping the first episode every single time because I didn't realize the streaming app had autoplay set to the second episode. For months I thought shows just started in the middle of the action. Now I check the episode list before hitting play, and I also read the two sentence synopsis on the show page. It feels silly but it uncovered a whole layer of story I was missing. Has anyone else ever accidentally started a show on the wrong episode and had to rewatch it? I went back and watched episode one of that crime drama and it made everything click, but now I'm wondering how many other shows I ruined for myself.

the_terry nailed it with that "shaky base" thing, that's exactly what it felt like. I did the same thing with a comedy series once, watched like 5 episodes before realizing I was on season 2 the whole time. It actually kinda worked out for me though because I went back and rewatched from the top and the inside jokes hit way harder the second time. Now I always peek at the episode titles and thumbnails first to make sure I'm not jumping in blind. Lowkey embarrassing but better than being lost for weeks.

Funny how that works, it’s like reading a book and starting at chapter two because you grabbed it off the shelf wrong. Once you notice it, you start double checking everything, like I do with instructions on new gadgets or even checking my own work orders twice now. It’s a good reminder that half the battle is just making sure you’re starting from the right spot, otherwise you’re building your whole understanding on a shaky base. Glad you caught it though, that first episode always has the setup that makes the rest of the season land right.
