My gut said no to a bike with filed-off numbers
I refused to work on it, thinking it might be stolen. But now I wonder if I cost myself a customer over a hunch.

A filed-off serial number is a huge red flag, not just a hunch. In my line of work, you learn to trust those gut calls. You probably saved yourself from handling stolen property, which is a real legal mess.
