Can we talk about how I chased a phantom creak for 3 days and it was the saddle rails?
Had a bike in the stand at my shop in Boise for a creak that showed up only under hard pedaling, and I tore apart the bottom bracket, greased the chainring bolts, re-torqued the cassette, swapped pedals twice, nothing. Third day I finally threw on a different saddle just to rule it out, and the noise vanished. Put the original back, snugged the rails and the seatpost clamp to 6 Nm with my torque wrench, and it stayed quiet on a 12 mile test ride. I had spent about 4 hours chasing stuff that was never the problem. I guess I keep skipping the cheap checks because I assume a creak under load has to be drivetrain related. What is the dumbest thing that turned out to be the real source of a noise for you?
Snugged my saddle rails once after chasing a creak through the whole drivetrain for a week, felt like an idiot but it worked. Now I always grab the saddle and twist it first before I touch anything else.
