My kid asked why we always make the same kind of bread

I was shaping loaves for our Saturday bake, the usual sourdough, when my 8-year-old looked up from his homework and said, 'Dad, why is it always that brown bread? Can't we make a bread that's fun?' It hit me that I've been stuck in a rut, making the same three recipes for maybe two years because they sell well at the farmers market. I realized I stopped baking for the joy of it and just baked for the routine. So last weekend, we made a bright purple loaf with beet powder and a sweet honey swirl bread, just for us. The mess was huge but his smile was bigger. It made me remember why I started this in the first place. Has anyone else gotten too stuck in their 'safe' recipes and found a way to mix it up?

Sometimes a routine is a good thing, it means you've got something reliable down. My family would riot if I stopped making our usual weekend pancakes. That purple bread sounds fun for a one-time mess, but I'd stick with what works.

Stick with what works" is how you end up with a kid who thinks bread is a punishment. That purple mess sounds like a core memory in the making.
