The great chicken escape took me three hours to figure out

My new hen, Nugget, kept getting out of the run every single afternoon. I checked the fence for holes, added more clips, the whole deal. Turns out she was using a tiny, loose board on the coop itself as a step to hop onto the roof and then down. I only saw it because I sat outside with a coffee and watched her do it. Has anyone else had a chicken turn into a tiny escape artist?

My old rooster, Hank, was a master of the jailbreak. He figured out the weak spot was the gate latch, not the fence. He'd peck at the metal hook until it bounced up just enough to swing open. I had to replace it with a carabiner clip, the kind you use on a backpack. He stood there and glared at it for a solid week after that.

That carabiner trick is genius... my neighbor's goat learned how to undo knots.

That rooster story from @ivanl18 shows how animals find the simple, dumb solution we overlook. We build a complex lock when the real problem is a basic hook. It's a good reminder to check for the obvious fix first.
