Vent: watched a guy at the track ruin his turbo because he used a cheap oil catch can without baffles

He blew a quart of oil through the intake on his second lap at Pacific Raceways last Saturday, and now I see three other builds at the shop with the same no-name cans installed wrong. has anyone else caught this mistake before it costs you an engine?

What is it with people thinking a $30 can from Amazon is gonna handle real track duty? That's like trusting a paper bag to hold your groceries. I swear half the guys at my local meet think baffles are just for show and that any random catch can will magically work. Seeing that oil cloud roll out of someone's hood is basically a $5k turbo going bye bye.

@jamieh76 hit the nail on the head about cheap cans, but heres something else I noticed. Most folks dont realize those no-name cans usually have the inlet and outlet ports way too close together. Even if they had baffles, the air just takes a shortcut from one port to the other without actually settling any oil. Combine that with a shitty mount location that lets the can slosh around and youve basically got a fancy looking oil delivery system straight to your intake. Seen it happen on at least three builds this year where the owner swore their can was installed right.
