TIL a guy at a car meet taught me why my intake sounds like crap

I was at a local meet in Phoenix last summer and this older dude with a beat up Foxbody walked up to my car. He listened for like 2 seconds and said 'your cold air intake is just sucking hot air from the engine bay'. He showed me how my filter was basically right above the exhaust manifold. Moved it down behind the bumper and the difference was night and day. Has anyone else had someone call out a dumb mod mistake at a meet that actually helped?

Did you actually test if moving it made a difference or just trust what some random guy said? Every car pulls hot air from the engine bay at idle, that's just how it works. Once you're moving, air is forced through the grille and the intake gets plenty of cool air anyway. Factory intakes are designed by engineers who know what they're doing, and they all sit under the hood. Moving your filter down low just risks sucking in water or road debris. Real power comes from tuning and exhaust, not relocating a plastic tube.

Real power comes from tuning and exhaust, not relocating a plastic tube" - that's the same kind of thinking that makes people ignore free, simple fixes, @ivan230. It's like when someone says proper tire pressure doesn't matter because it's just air, or that cleaning your contacts is a waste of time when they could be the reason your car runs rough. The simplest stuff gets overlooked because everyone wants to believe you need expensive parts to make a difference.
