New mechanics always scoff at my vacuum gauge, yet it spotted an intake leak that a scan tool missed.

Respect both tools for their jobs. A vacuum gauge finds mechanical leaks, but a scan tool reads the computer data. You need both for a proper check.

Exactly. It's like trying to fix a radio by only listening to the static. The scan tool tells you the computer is getting a bad signal, but the smoke machine or vacuum gauge shows you the cracked hose causing it. One tells you the problem exists, the other helps you actually find the thing to fix. Skipping either step just means you're guessing.

But don't smoke machines find leaks better?
