You'll call me insane, but I prefer dollar store sponges over premium buffing pads
Ran out of pads right before a big detail job last month. Grabbed a pack of cheap sponges, and they worked so well I now use them for all my final polishing. Do you ever find simple solutions beating out fancy gear?

Came across a car blog that said sometimes the cheapest tools give the most even finish. Your sponge trick seems to line up with that idea. Ever try other household items for detailing?

Honestly, how far can you take that idea before it gets weird? I've used a clay bar made from old play-doh that actually worked in a pinch. Some folks swear by using coffee filters for a final wipe down because they're lint free. But a lot of household stuff just scratches the clear coat, like using paper towels or dish soap. You gotta be real careful with the cheap hacks.

@the_sage, my sponge trick is for wax, not the finish.
