That old maple in the backyard had to go, but my conscience is still tangled

I was called to assess a massive sugar maple on a residential property. The homeowners were desperate to build a new deck and claimed the tree was dropping too many leaves. Upon inspection, the tree was healthy, just mature, but they insisted on removal for convenience. I explained the ecological value and offered alternatives like pruning, yet they were set on cutting it down. The quote was good money, and part of me needed the job. I ended up green-lighting the removal, and watching it come down felt like a betrayal! Now, every time I drive by that street, I see the empty space and regret not pushing harder. It's a constant reminder that sometimes, the right call isn't the easiest one to make.
