PSA: Check the drain pump filter on every washer you touch

I had a Samsung washer I couldn't figure out why it was throwing an error code. Turns out a kid's sock was jammed in the drain pump filter, took me 2 minutes to fix after I finally checked it. Do you always pop the filter open before you start troubleshooting?

I read somewhere that half of washer service calls are just clogged filters, not actual mechanical failures. I do pop the filter open first now ever since I wasted an hour on a similar issue.

I've got a front-load washer and the filter trap is at the bottom behind a little door. First time I cleaned it out I found a bobby pin, a quarter, and what looked like a whole sock's worth of lint. Now I just make it part of my monthly routine, takes like five minutes. Saves me from having to pull the machine out and drain it manually when it stops spinning.
