Remember that fanfic where he did. It got dark fast, ended with Sauron winning.

Yeah but what about the Shire, like @elliotk11 said it goes bad but slower.

The thing about the Shire going bad slower isn't quite right. If Frodo kept the Ring, Sauron would have won the war outside. Armies would have rolled over everything, Shire included. Like @elliotk11 said, it ends with Sauron winning. The Ring would call to him directly from Bag End. There's no slow fade, it's just over.
