That 'measure twice, cut once' bit failed me at 6 AM

I was trimming baseboard in a client's house near Austin when my tape said 72 inches, but the wall actually needed 72 and a quarter, so I cut it short and had to drive 20 minutes for another stick. What old saying has quietly let you down at the worst possible moment?

Man, 20 minutes for one piece of baseboard? That would've ended me right there. I can picture you standing in the aisle at the store at 6 AM, holding that short cut, just staring at it in defeat. The worst part is when you know the tape is right, but the wall just decided to be stubborn that day. I've had that exact thing happen with crown molding, where I shaved off a smidge too much and suddenly I'm praying the caulk will save me. It never does.
