Dropped $120 on a cork mat and now my records sound dead

Swapped my felt platter mat for a cork one last weekend and the highs got so muffled my wife asked if I broke the stylus, so is cork actually good for anything or did I just waste my cash?

Wait, did you get the same cork mat from that audiophile site that claims it "tightens the low end"? Because I had the exact same thing happen. My copy of Kind of Blue sounded like the sax was playing through a pillow, and the cymbals just vanished. I kept flipping it over thinking I put it on wrong, but nope. It sat in a drawer for two months before I threw it back on just to see, and it was still dead as a doornail. Cork might be great for wine bottles or mood boards, but for turntables, it's a $120 mistake I'm still mad about.
