The second-screen trick that fixed old sitcoms for me
I used to get bored rewatching 90s sitcoms because I knew every joke. Last month I tried playing a simple phone game during the slow parts and focusing fully during the punchlines. It sounds dumb but it makes the timing feel fresh again, like I'm half-watching with my brain on a delay. Anyone else found a weird way to keep classic episodes from going stale?

Muting the laugh track changes everything. Old sitcoms rely on that cue to tell you when something's funny, so removing it makes you actually watch the actors' faces and the awkward pauses between lines. The timing falls apart in a way that's almost better, like you're seeing the raw takes before the editors glued on the fake reaction. Seinfeld especially gets weird because half the jokes are just Jerry side-eyeing the camera and the track covers how long he holds it. Try Friends without the audience roar and you'll notice Chandler's delivery has a beat that feels completely different. It's not fresh, but it's unfamiliar, which is close enough.
