The gas station in Dwight went from nothing to a mural in 4 months

Drove through Dwight last fall for a work thing. Place was dead. Just a closed gas station and some weeds. Passed by again this week and someone painted a huge mural on the side. Corn fields, a train, the whole deal. Turns out the town got a grant for it. $12,000 maybe. Local artist did it in 3 weeks. Now people actually pull over to take pictures. Saw two cars there on a Tuesday. That's more than I saw all year before. Anyone else got a town that got a sudden upgrade?

Honestly that $12,000 went further than most town budgets. The corn field mural sounds sick, people love that small town Americana stuff. Tbh my cousin's town spent double on a digital sign and nobody stops for it. Guess art beats tech every time.

Art beats tech every time" got me thinking though. Was the mural painted by a local artist or someone they brought in? Because if it was local, that $12,000 probably did double duty, paying an artist AND giving the town something to argue about for years, which is half the fun. Also, what's the upkeep like on a corn field mural? I'd imagine it fades or needs touching up, does the town budget for that every couple years? Just curious if the long term cost gets talked about or if it's one and done.
