TIL how tough it is to fact-check family legends about lost treasure
I've been digging into my family's story about a hidden cache from the Civil War. I picked up how to use online archives for military records. It's so frustrating because the dates don't match up and names are spelled wrong. Now I'm stuck wondering if the whole tale is just false. I wish there was a easier way to check these things.

Those mix-ups could mean the story's real, just messy.

Yeah "the story's real, just messy" hit me hard. I used to believe a TRUE account had to be perfect and neat. But my cousin told me about her car accident once and mixed up which street it happened on. The messy details made it clear she was REALLY there, not just reciting some polished tale. Now I see those mix-ups as proof someone is trying to recall a real thing, not just a made-up story. It totally changed how I listen to people.

My grandpa swore his dad fought at Shiloh but the records show he was in Ohio that whole year. Faithbarnes has a point, but sometimes a messy story is just wrong.
