Update: Had to decide about a blocked trail sign yesterday
It was knocked over and hard to see, but moving it felt like messing with trail markers. I propped it up loosely so hikers could spot it without fully fixing it.

Your propping idea is smart because I once used rocks to support a fallen sign and it held for months.

That's a pretty solid middle ground you found. Fully moving a downed sign can get you in trouble if it's an official marker, but leaving it flat is no help to anyone. Propping it up lets the next person know where it should go without you making a permanent call. Might be worth letting the trail maintainers know it needs a proper fix, though.

Trail maintainers"?? You actually think someone's out there fixing these things? Man, half the trails I hike have bridges washed out for years and signposts are just rotten stumps. I found one last month that was just a piece of duct tape on a tree... that was the "marker". The idea of a dedicated person to call is kind of amazing.
