Rant: My new hiking boots ruined my weekend on the Ridge Trail.
I stopped breaking in boots before big hikes to save time. Now my feet are covered in blisters and I had to cut the trip short.

Thick socks are a good start, but you have to get the right kind. A thin liner sock under a thick wool one cuts down on friction way more than just one bulky pair. It's the rubbing that causes blisters, not just pressure. That two layer system has saved me more times than I can count.

Heard from a buddy that wearing your new boots around the house for a week does wonders. Tbh, I tried that once and it saved my feet on a long walk. Also, read somewhere that blister pads are a lifesaver if you skip the break-in. Ngl, cutting a hike short because of foot pain is the worst feeling. Maybe next time, try a shorter test hike before going all out on the ridge.
