My vise seized up, so I oil it after each use now
I believed it was not necessary. When it froze during a rifle teardown, I realized my mistake. A little oil prevents big problems.

That "made it a routine" part is SO true. My bench vise locked up tight last winter when I was trying to hold a fitting. I had to beat the handle with a mallet, it was a huge pain. Now I keep an old oil can right there and give the screw a quick squirt after I use it. It just glides now. Skipping that step is a mistake you only make once.

When you said it's a mistake you only make once, that really hits home. But even with a routine like @abbythompson mentioned, using the wrong oil can still cause issues in cold weather. I found that a light machine oil works better than heavy grease when it gets chilly.
