Appreciation post: The new library in Springfield made me look at glass differently
I was dropping off a package across the street from the new public library they just finished. The whole front is this massive, curved glass wall, maybe 20 feet high. I stood there for a good five minutes just watching how the afternoon sun hit it, and I realized I was only looking at the reflections, not the structure holding it all up. You guys ever get so used to the mechanics of a job that you forget to see the finished product as something beautiful? What's the coolest piece of architectural glass you've seen lately?

Is it really that deep though? It's just a building with a lot of windows. I see fancy glass on banks and offices all the time and it's just there to look expensive.

Yeah grantnelson, I get what you mean about it just being fancy glass to look expensive. But some of these new buildings feel different, like they're trying so hard to be a symbol. It's not just a clear window you can see through. It's that mirrored kind where you can't see in at all, just your own reflection staring back. Makes the whole place feel closed off, even with all that light.

Totally get where you're coming from. Walked past that new insurance tower downtown last week and it's just a giant, cold mirror. You can't see a single person or desk inside, just a warped reflection of the traffic and the old brick diner across the street that it kinda looks down on. Feels less like a building and more like a statement.
