It dawned on me that my early days with a coal furnace shaped my whole approach.
We had to read the fire's mood without any digital reads. Now with gas, I still catch myself looking for those same tells.

Totally get this. My grandpa's old wood stove taught me the same kind of watching, listening for the right crackle and checking the color of the flames. You just learn a feel for it that sticks with you. Even now with my boring electric heat, I'll catch myself staring at the baseboard like it's going to tell me something. That hands-on sense never really leaves, even when the tech gets simpler.

Still catch myself giving my coffee machine a suspicious side-eye like it's some finicky old percolator.
